WHAT IS CITY YEAR ?

City Year is a non profit organization that unites young people aged 17-24 for a year of demanding full-time national service. These young leaders come from diverse backgrounds and put their idealism to work by tutoring and mentoring school children, reclaiming public spaces, and organizing after-school programs, school vacation camps, and the Starfish Corps, Young Heroes, and City Heroes programs. City Year was founded on the belief that young people can change the world. Its vision is that one day a year of service will become an opportunity for and common expectation of every young person. As tutors, mentors, and role models, their young leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods across the U.S. and South Africa. City Year aims to build democracy through citizen service, civic engagement, leadership development, and social entrepreneurship. City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps.

City Year was founded in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, then-roommates at Harvard Law School, who felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing our nation's most pressing issues. Initially, corps members focused their efforts on community rehabilitation, beautification of neighborhoods, and building a sense of community throughout Boston. Over the years though, the organization has expanded, opening sites, in 18 cities throughout the U.S. In early 2005, City Year opened its first international site in South Africa.[2] Since 1988, City Year has been built on the belief that one person can make a difference, and with the vision that one day service will be a common expectation – and a real opportunity – for citizens all around the world. In 2006 after Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf region, City Year opened a site in Louisiana to help with the recovery. The Louisiana Corps motto was “Here to Serve, Here to Stay.

City Year Corps members

The Full-Time Youth Service Corps is the primary program of City Year. Over 1,400 people from the ages of 17-24 serve a year with City Year performing a combination of service, leadership development, and civic engagement as Corps members. They may be part school partnerships with the program Whole School, Whole Child, or the Heroes programs.[3]
To respond to the challenges facing public education, Corps members who are on school partnership teams work in schools full time providing academic support and after school programming. These school partnerships work with a curriculum developed by City Year called Whole School, Whole Child.[4]
The Young Heroes and City Heroes programs for middle school and high school students respectively are leadership and service programs run by City Year corps member teams. The Heroes programs run from January to June on Saturdays. In the morning of Heroes Saturdays, have themes on social issues such as hunger, homelessness, ageism, drug abuse, and racism. During these days, heroes participate in a workshops and, perform community service projects.

Currently, City Year sites are located in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbia (South Carolina), Columbus (Ohio), Detroit, Little Rock and North Little Rock, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Miami, New Hampshire, New York City, Philadelphia, Rhode Island, San Antonio, San José and Silicon Valley, Seattle and King County, Johannesburg in South Africa, and Washington, D.C

The Summer Youth Teen Employment Center is a newly developed three year matriculation certificate program for At Risk Youth Teens that will provide job readiness skills training in the warehousing industry.

Collaborative Partners:
8th District A.M.E. Hurricane Relief Center

The Hurricane Relief Center is a non-profit 501c3 faith based organization which was organized in 2005 due to the arisen need in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The distribution center provides, direct aid and information community resource material to individuals and families that are survivors of disasters. The corporate office is located in Jackson, Mississippi. The Louisiana satellite site is located inside of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church located at 6175 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Project Jumpstart LLC
Project Jumpstart LLC is a newly created non-profit service organization whose mission is to assist and empower impoverished individuals and families in the areas of education, housing, job skill training, financial literary and family planning. This organization is temporarily located at 4547 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The organization's primary funding is from private, corporate and individual donations.

Western New Orleans /Baton Rouge District Ministerial Alliance
The WNOBR Ministerial Alliance is a non-profit faith based organization that consists of 20 churches which serve a ten parish area across the state of Louisiana with five of those churches located in the East Baton Rouge Parish.

Rev. M. J. Black, Jr. is the Presiding Elder. Rev. James Palmer, Sr., pastor of Green Chapel A.M.E. Church located at 4245 North 32nd Street, Baton Rouge Louisiana is president of the organization. The organization's primary funding is supported by its member pastors and congregational lay members across the district.

The 8th District A.M.E. Hurricane Relief Center in collaboration with Project Jumpstart LLC and the WNOBR Ministerial Alliance ( a coalition of 20 churches which serves ten parishes in the state of Louisiana including the rural parishes of St. Helena, Tangipahoa, West Feliciana, and East Feliciana) will provide apprenticeship opportunities for At Risk Youth Teens age 13 to 17 in the area of warehousing. This program will provide teens the opportunity to work during the week, after school and on weekends to access job skills and training in the areas of : inventory control, shipping and receiving, forklift operation, professional development and managerial training.

Case Management:
The leading agency is Project Jumpstart. This module will be used to identify and address social service needs for the enrolled teens and their family.

Mentoring:

The leading agency will be the WNOBR Ministerial Alliance. The opportunity to participate in the GED and home school program will be available as an alternitive solution to fulfilling the mandatory education entry guideline.

Job Placement:

The Leading agency will be the 8th District AME Hurricane Relief Center. This module of the program will emphasize matriculation of the enrollees into the corporate and private workforce in the are of warehousing.

A referral network of community social service resources will be utilized to assist the student in the development of life character building skills. All applicants will be enrolled and screened through an intake process. A family need analysis will be done and reviewed upon acceptance to the program. Hands on training of shipping and receiving, inventory control, loss risk management and safety and forklift training will be provided in the warehouse of the 8th District Hurricane Relief Center. Classroom courses of professional development along with the extensive study of basic math, english, reading and computer literacy will be offered during the length of the program. Stipends will be provided to the teens on a bi-weekly basis during their 3 year period of enrollment in the summer program.

To assist and empower individuals and families that are impoverished and displaced due to disasters. Opening doors and presenting opportunities in the areas of education, housing, financial literacy, and job skill readiness training.

ABOUT PROJECT JUMPSTART

Project Jumpstart was organized in August, 2007. There are four founders of this organization. The first board meeting convened at the Project Jumpstart Corporate office located at 4547 North Boulevard Baton Rouge, LA 70805.
Ms. Ashley Nelson is the current executive director of the program and Rev. Belinda Washington is chairman of the board.
Since its conception, Project Jumpstart has been in a collaborative partnership with the 8th District AME Hurricane Relief Center and Cup of Joy Ministries. Project Jumpstart is a non profit organization committed to serving and impacting lives of families that have been affected by not only natural disasters but experience disasters of divorce, domestic violence and mandatory evictions caused by circumstances beyond their control
